AVO Website Service Outage - Planned Maintenance and Power Downs at Butrovich Data Center

On Saturday, May 11, Tuesday, May 14, and Saturday, May 18, the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Facilities Services and Office of Information Technology will be conducting planned maintenance at the Butrovich Data Center (BDC) to perform essential electrical updates to integrate a maintenance bypass switch for the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the BDC. The BDC is a critical facility that houses computing and networking hardware for the University of Alaska system, including the servers of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). This maintenance work is necessary to ensure the continued high-availability capabilities of the data center.

During the maintenance, all electrical systems in the BDC must be powered down completely. Consequently, all services and systems within the BDC, including the avo.alaska.edu website, will be temporarily unavailable. AVO's monitoring capabilities will be mostly unaffected and we will continue to issue formal scheduled and event-driven notifications as needed during the outages.

Please take note of the following maintenance schedule:

  • Saturday May 11:  The power down will commence at 4:00 AM and last until 9:00 PM AKDT.
  • Tuesday May 14:  Intermittent service outages between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM AKDT.
  • Saturday May 18: The power down will commence at 5:00 AM and last until 11:59 PM AKDT.

During these maintenance periods, the primary responsibility for reporting on volcanic activity in Alaska will be handled by the USGS Volcano Hazards Program. You can access their updates at https://www.usgs.gov/programs/VHP/volcano-updates#avo.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this maintenance, please feel free to contact Scott Crass at scott.crass@alaska.gov.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by these necessary maintenance activities and appreciate your understanding as we work diligently to ensure the continued reliability and performance of the Butrovich Data Center.
